John Rosengrant Retirement Gift
One of my bosses at Legacy Effects, John Rosengrant, retired in March 2022 after a 40 year illustrious career in special effects. This was my retirement gift to him... an 8 inch tall caricature showing several aspects of his career including his famous role as the velociraptor walking legs in both Jurassic Park and Jurassic Park III. Other very famous films he was a huge part of were The Terminator (all of them), Aliens and most recently The Mandalorian, for which he won 2 Emmy Awards. Small figures, vehicles, and dioramas of historical war scenes have always been a big hobby and an actual commission business for John through the years so I thought it fitting to display him painting a WW II Sherman tank model and for comical affect placed him in a traditional retirement rocking chair. Another big reference to his career is The Winston Effect book on the bookshelf showing his long career as one of Stan Winston's art department coordinators. His Legacy Effects keys hang on the side of the bookshelf and on the back of the bookcase I wrote a small message of best wishes. Obviously I only brushed the surface of his career and could not include all of his achievements in the gift. The video and pics show my original digital sculpture in both grayscale and color as well as all the pieces of the 3D printed parts. There are a few work-in-progress painting shots and after I completed the "model kit" I laid out all the parts to photograph and then of course shot the final maquette figurine. This project took a total of about 90 days from beginning to completion and was sculpted in ZBrush and rendered in Keyshot. The 3D printed parts were done in both HP Multi Jet Fusion (nylon) and Carbon 3D which is resin based. I painted it using both airbrush and traditional techniques with an old-fashioned paintbrush. A Big shout out to Dean Schneider for printing all the pieces and to the other partners at Legacy Effects, Alan Scott, Lindsay Macgowan, and Shane Mahan for allowing me to use their 3D printers and facility to paint the project.
